Personal Bag and Suitcase (Carry-On)
Usually most airports give you not only your carry on suitcase but also a personal bag, whether thats a purse, backpack, it’s important you start your packing journey with a good base. Here are a few recommendations when it comes to luggage.
If you’re looking for something more affordable that still has all the bells and whistles, the Coolife suitcase is for you. But if you want higher quality and have a bit more wiggle room in your budget, the American Tourister is the perfect choice.

Flight Essentials
Those long flights can be EXCRUCIATING, which is why it’s so important to have the right in-flight essentials. Here are some of my favorite must-haves that can make your next long flight a little bit more enjoyable.
Comfort
Entertainment
I couldn’t survive a long flight without my AirPod Pros! I would highly recommend bringing a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones (you never know if you’ll get sat next to a crying baby on a 15 hour flight).
Toiletries
I would be sure to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste, because once you get off that airplane, you are going to want to freshen yourself up. However, Most hotels and ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) provide the important toiletries that you would be bringing. So if you are someone who is worried about liquids and are only taking a carry-on, don’t worry! If you decide you want to bring your own products these are some items I would be sure to get!
Additional Items
- Floss
- Q-Tips
- Mouthwash (Travel Size for Carry-on)
- Deodorant
- Makeup
- Razor Shaving Cream
- Hairbush or Comb
- BUY NAILCLIPPERS IN TOKYO
- Lip Balm
- Moisturizer & Facewash
What To Wear In Japan
Your Japan packing list will vary depending on the season, but if you’re visiting in the summer, get ready, because it’s going to get HOT. That’s why it’s so important to pack light and breathable clothing that will keep you cool and comfortable.
If you’re traveling with a large suitcase, you’ll have more flexibility. But for my carry-on baddies, here’s what worked best for me:
👉 Pack 4 tops, 4 bottoms, 2 statement outfits, 1–2 dresses, and a light rain jacket. I found the key to carry-on success was focusing on quality over quantity! So choosing pieces that can be easily mixed and matched for multiple looks, saves not only space but also the bank.
In the wardrobe department, here’s a cultural tip: Most locals don’t typically wear tank tops or low-cut tops in public, especially in more traditional areas like Kyoto. It’s not a fashion crime if you do, but being mindful of cultural norms can help you blend in and show respect.
Strive for breathable pants and skirts!
Shoes
When it comes to shoes, make sure to pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes—you’ll be doing a lot of walking in Japan. It’s also a good idea to bring a slightly dressier pair, like ankle boots or low heels, for going out or visiting nicer restaurants and attractions.
Other Clothing Items
- Pajamas
- Rain Jacket (Depending on Season)
- Hat or cap (especially in summer)
- Swimsuit
- Dresses
- Light Jacket
Electronics
If you plan on taking lots of photos or using your phone for navigation, I highly recommend bringing a portable charger – you don’t want to find yourself with a dead battery halfway through the day. Also, if you’re visiting Japan in the summer, pack a small portable fan. Trust me, the heat and humidity are no joke, and a fan can be a game changer!
Miscellaneous
It might seem odd to pack a small hand towel, but in Japan it’s a must. Many public bathrooms don’t have paper towels or hand dryers, this is because in Japanese culture they value conservation. So, I provided a few additional items you might not think to pack!
Other Miscellaneous
- Small daypack or crossbody bag
- Phrasebook or translation app (Google Translate Will Be Your BestFriend)
- Foldable shopping bag (Japan charges for plastic bags)
- Notebook/journal
- Travel guidebook or printed itinerary
- Pepto Bismol (You never know when you’ll need it)
Definitely Don’t Forget
Don’t forget the travel MVPs—your passport, ID, credit cards, cash, and any must-have documents. Without them, you’re not going anywhere (except maybe back home)!
- Passport/Passport Holder
- Credit Cards
- Cash
- Important Documentation
- Itinerary
- Travel insurance Info
